Aki Fujino

Aki Fujino

Aki is a young girl who commits suicide at the start of the story by jumping from the top of a building. During the investigation, it is discovered that she had been writing a novel and corresponding with Mizorogi, whom he'd met at a party hosted by his publisher. She has a twin sister named Sakura, whom she's been separated from since they were young, when their parents divorced; however, the two had reconnected shortly before Aki's death.

About Fujiko Akiyama:
"Aki Fujino" is the pen name initially used by Fujiko Akiyama, a university student who came to live in Tokyo in order to meet Mizorogi, whom she'd been obsessed with. She writes numerous letters to Mizorogi under the name of "Aki Fujino", as well as the manuscript for Utsubora that she sends to Mizorogi's publisher.

Sakura also uses the identity of "Aki Fujino" at times, specifically when meeting Mizorogi at the party and the few times they meet afterwards. Sakura and Aki aren't actually sisters, or even related at all.

After Sakura seduces Mizorogi, Fujiko gets cosmetic surgery to look identical to Sakura in order to assume the identity of "Aki Fujino" permanently. However, after spending a night with Mizorogi (the only occasion when the two meet in person), Fujiko mails Sakura a copy of the key to her apartment, which contains the remainder of the Utsubora manuscript, and commits suicide in order to attain immortality through inspiring Mizorogi's greatest work and becoming a character in it.
