Emil appears in episode 3, when he invites Elaina to his house for breakfast. He is the son of the mayor of one of the towns Elaina visits, and is in love with Nino, the house servant. To make her happy, he distills the happiness extracted from moments from various people's lives, and plans to gift it to her.

Emil doesn't seem to be aware that his father actually bought Nino and she is a slave, not just a servant, and interprets her fear and apprehension towards him and his father as shyness.
