Josh is a member of the Galland family; after his father and mother were murdered, the responsibility of carrying on the family's mission fell on Josh's shoulders. He was taken in by his grandfather and trained as an assassin against werewolves, but managed to cut ties with the Galland family (in his view) after a few years, left for America, and returned as a pianist working at random in bars.

Initially, Coyote only addresses him as "Marleen" and Josh addresses Coyote as "Lili", after the German love song "Lili Marleen" that Josh played after noticing that Coyote liked it. After he finds out Josh's true identity, Coyote is conflicted between the gentle Marleen he'd known and the supposed cold-blooded killer Josh.
