Mash Vandead

マッシュ・ヴァンデッド

Mash is the main protagonist of the series and a first year student at Easton Magic Academy, where he is a member of Adler dorm. He is of average height, wearing the standard Easton Magic Academy robes. When he is not wearing the robes, he wears skin-tight under-armor and pair of white shorts. He has got black hair, styled in a bowl cut. He has a fake magic mark on his left cheek, as he was born without a mark, leading him to be unable to use magic, but was given a fake mark by Brad Coleman, so that people wouldn’t be let on to his lack of magic. He loves cream puffs and often acts in order to obtain or protect them. Mash cares deeply for his friends and family and frequently challenges powerful figures in order to protect them.

Into Arc
Mash is introduced when he is doing weight training in the woods. After finishing his training, he eats a cream puff and goes home. When he arrives home, his father, Regro, reminds him to never go into the city, as he does not have a magic mark, and because of this, will be taken away by the Bureau of Magic. However, Mash sees an advert for a cream puff stall and goes into the city. After buying the cream puffs, his hood falls down, revealing that he doesn’t have magic mark. Because of this, Brad Coleman, a policeman, is called. He arrives and finds Mash, but Regro appears and takes Mash and runs home. When they arrive home, Mash goes to do more training, leaving Regro alone when Brad and two other policeman arrive. Mash arrives back at the house, and hears Brad attack Regro through the door. This causes Mash to burst through the door, knocking one of the policeman out. He then attacks the other policeman, Terry, before Brad begins his attack. However, all of his spells are unsuccessful as Mash easily deflects all of them. After seeing this, Brad proposes a deal to Mash. He is to enroll in a magic school and become a Divine Visionary, a title given to one exepotional student each year. In return for letting his lack of magic slide, Brad will be given money and prestige that come along with the title. Mash accepts the offer, saying that he wants to be able to live in piece with Regro.

During the entrance exams, Mash’s behavior irritates Professor Claude Lucci, as he repeatedly questions Lucci’s use of magic. After this, Lucci bribes Lemon into tricking Mash and making him fail the exam, by saying that he will give her family money, as they are very poor. Lemon attempts to stop Mash, but she fails and ends up being saved by him instead. After Lucci sees this, he draws his wand, but Mash snaps it in half. Headmaster Wahlberg than interrupts and takes Mash away.

Wahlberg then begins Mash’s final interview. He casts a spell, putting the person’s soul who Mash cherishes the most into a doll. There is a blade slowly approaching this doll, and Mash has to stop it. To do this, Mash puts his hands underneath it, stopping it from moving down. After seeing this, Wahlberg says that Mash embodies the qualities that they are looking for at Easton.

Shortly after his time begins at Easton, Mash meets Finn Ames. At first, Finn tries to avoid Mash, as he says that he is troublesome, but they soon become friends as a result of Mash’s kindness. Mash clashes with Lloyd Cavill, after Mash mishears Lloyd’s name. Lloyd gets Mash to do a series of tasks for him, also making Finn damage Mash’s books. After Mash sees Lloyd attack Finn, he gets very angry and attacks Lloyd, ultimately defeating him. Vice-principle Cregos sees this happens and blames Mash, despite seeing that it was Lloyd in the wrong. After this, Mash grabs Cregos and slams him into the ground, burying him.

After these incidents, Mash is summoned to see Headmaster Wahlberg. Wahlberg says that the Bureau of Magic have requested that Mash be expelled, as Lloyd’s parents are high ranking members of the Bureau. However, Wahlberg overrides the decision, saying that Mash should not be punished for protecting his friend.

Mash is then recruited to join Adler dorm’s Duelo team. However, Mash cannot fly, meaning that he cannot participate, as the game revolves around flying. He tries to explain this to Tom Knowles, the team captain, but he does not listen. During the game, Tom explains the rules to Mash and then goes to return to the match, but he is knocked down off of his broom. Mash then leaps into the air, managing to float by constantly kicking his legs. He then receives the ball and manages to score, curling the ball so that it returns to him. He does this repeatedly until his team wins the game, receiving a silver coin each as a reward.

Shortly after this, Mash meets Lance Crown for the first time when he sucks Lemon, Finn and Tom into a glass bottle. He says that if he wants his friends back, he must go to the forest behind the owl shed. He goes there and Lance reveals that he has got two silver coins. He challenges Mash to a fight, betting their coins on the result. Mash accepts and the fight begins, however Lance appears to under estimate Mash, as Mash quickly gains the upper hand. After retrieving the bottle, Mash calls the fight off, saying that he is done, after he saw a locket that Lance has with a picture of his sister inside. After concluding that Lance is a good person and is trying to help his sister, he loses all motivation to fight with him. After this, Lance gives Mash one of his silver coins.

Forest Arc
Later on, Mash arrives at a forest with his class, where he meets Dot. Dot immediately says that he dislikes Mash, after he sees him talking to Lemon, saying that he hates guys who get attention from women. The teacher then reveals why they are there, saying that they will need to defeat Forest Scorpions, large scorpions that hold gems in their foreheads. These gems will then be exchanged for bronze or silver coins, depending on their size. Before entering the forest, Mash clashes with Silva, a boy who is in the year above Mash, and who Lance says is infamous for his nasty nature. Shortly after they enter the forest, Mash and Dot run into Silva. Silva challenges Dot to take five hits, and if he does and stays standing, he will give him a silver coin. He accepts the offer, and says that he will also take five hits for Mash. He takes some of the hits, but is unable to stand. This causes Mash to challenge Silva, saying that he will hit Silva ten times. However, after two hits, Mash says that he feels bad for Silva and stops. While confronting Silva, Mash knocks out a large scorpion, giving him another two silver coins, and gets an additional silver coin from Silva, giving him five in total. He puts them together and it becomes a gold coin.

Magia Lupus Arc
Later on, Mash gets lost and overhears Abel and Wirth Mádl talking to Silva. They say that they gave him a chance and that he failed them, causing Abel to turn him into a doll. After Mash misunderstands what Abel says, he says that Mash can leave if he gives him his gold coin. He refuses, causing Abel to attack him. After a brief fight, Abel takes Mash gold coin, and turns Silva back to a human. Mash takes Silva and goes to the infirmary, leaving Abel to discover that Mash had secretly switched the gold coin with a button.

As a result of Mash’s clash with Lloyd and Vice-principal Cregos, Mash was order to clean the owl sheds for a week. While there, Lance joins him, saying that Mash shouldn’t be alone in case Lang dorm attack and try to take his coin. Lance’s prediction comes true as the Sixth and Seventh Fangs of the Magia Lupus arrive in an attempt to steal the coin. Mash takes on Olore, the Sixth Fang, while Lance takes on the Seventh Fang. Both are victorious, making relatively easy work of their opponents. However, the Second Fang arrives to retrieve the two who had lost, showing Mash and Lance how powerful the upper Fangs are. Some time later, Tom is in the infirmary and says that he cannot use his magic. This causes Mash, Lance, Finn and Dot to try to find where the Magia Lupus are hiding, as they are convinced they are behind it. Lance is able to find a hidden door, after they see a puppet version of Lemon disappear around a corner. They go through the door and down some stairs, leading to an arena. The group ends up getting separated, with Mash facing the Second Fang, Lance facing the Third Fang, and Finn and Dot facing the Fourth and Fifth Fangs, after a relative struggle, they all manage to win their fights. Wahlberg sends Divine Visionary Rayne Ames, Finn’s brother, to take care of the Magia Lupus. While there, he runs into Mash and mistakes him for an enemy. After he attacks Mash, he realizes who he is, as Wahlberg had mentioned him and apologizes by giving him a Magic Kerchief, an magic item that can heal wounds. After this, Mash moves to challenge Abel. After finding him, they have a brief talk before the fight starts. Although proving to be by far his toughest opponent yet, Mash is able to defeat Abel. After learning of his defeat, Innocent Zero send Cell War to kill him, as he had broken their agreement. Abyss Razor, the Second Fang, tries to stop Cell from killing Abel, and is therefore fatally injured, seeing this Mash grows angry and attacks Cell. After a brief fight, Cell retreats saying that he and Mash will be seeing each other again very soon. During this fight, the others realize that Mash cannot use magic as he smashes a magic repelling mirror with a kick.

After this, the Bureau of Magic also find out about Mash’s lack of magic and summon him to an emergency inquiry. Bless Minister, the Vice Director of the Bureau of Magic, says that Mash concealing his magic is a serious crime and requires punishment. However, Ryoh Grantz, the Magic Security Forces Captain, who is also present at the trial, gives Mash a chance to prove himself. He gives him a candle and tells him to light it without touching it, something that should only be capable with magic. Mash is successful in lighting the candle, impressing Minister and Grantz.
