Ms. Nagano is an old woman who's lived her life on her own, not depending on others — however, this lifestyle has also lead to her being seen as a "bitter old hag" by the neighbors, who generally avoid approaching her. She takes pity on a feeble, sickly abandoned Akita puppy and takes him back to her place, where the two spend their time watching over each other while waiting for death.
