Nanao's only wish is to live a normal life, which is made significantly more difficult to achieve because she can see spirits. This has lead to her being isolated not only by her peers, but also her own family. Although she is afraid of the spirits most of the time, Nanao still wants to see the good in them, even when she ends up in trouble for it. Akajita describes her as a "lamp", since her power draws spirits to feed on her lifeforce.
