With a birth of great pain, Richard was born intersex (general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male).

Richard's mother saw him as a monster and despised him. Leaving him to be loved by his father, who was oblivious to his wife's hatred. Richard himself is a tormented child, fearing abandonment and suffering from strange visions of Joan of Arc, who tells him that he is a demon to be feared.
Richard grew up beneath his older brothers skill and expectations. Often training to make up for his fragility. Despite his weakness, he was treated as a part of the family by the others excluding his mother. Due to his mother's neglect, Richard grew up with a deep love and longing to be by his father's side.

He wishes to become greater through his training while he waits for his father to become king.
